Turquoise water and white sand at a Caribbean beach resort

Planning guide

The cruise packing list I actually use

What goes in your carry-on for the first day, what to pack for the week, and the items ships commonly do not allow.

Your carry-on for the first day

Checked bags can take hours to reach your cabin. Keep anything you need on day one with you.

  • Passport or required travel documents, plus your cruise documents
  • Medications in their original containers
  • Swimsuit, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Phone, charger and a change of clothes
  • Any valuables and jewelry

Clothes for the week

  • Light daytime clothes and a cover-up for the pool deck
  • One or two dressier outfits if your ship has formal or dress-up nights
  • A light jacket or sweater, since dining rooms and theaters can feel cold
  • Comfortable walking shoes for port days
  • Water shoes if you plan to snorkel or visit rocky beaches

Small things people forget

  • A lanyard or card holder for your ship card
  • A small day bag for shore excursions
  • Motion sickness remedies, if you are prone to it
  • A refillable water bottle
  • Copies of your documents saved on your phone

Things to check before you pack

Each cruise line publishes its own list of items you cannot bring aboard. Common examples are clothes irons, candles and some kinds of power strips. Rules on drinks you can carry on also vary by line. Check your line's current rules before you pack.

What I handle for you

When you book with me, I send your cruise line's current rules and documents ahead of time and help you plan the flights and transfers around sailing day.
