Planning guide

Leaving from Nashville, without the airport scramble

Where a car actually collects you, how early to arrive, what parking really costs, and the transfers that decide how the whole trip starts.

Before you leave the house

Two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one is the baseline the airport itself suggests. Treat it as a floor rather than a plan: it assumes you reach the terminal with time to spare.

So work backwards from it. The drive from downtown is usually around twenty minutes but stretches a good deal further in congestion; parking or a courtesy shuttle adds more; a ride-hail pick-up means walking into a garage. Airline bag-drop and check-in deadlines are separate from the security queue, and stricter.

It is one terminal now

Older write-ups still describe BNA as separate North and South terminals with their own checkpoints. That was a construction-era arrangement. Today there is one passenger terminal: check-in on Level 3, a central security checkpoint feeding the concourses, and a rebuilt Grand Lobby.

Which means an airline-by-terminal list copied from an old blog post is likely to be wrong. Read the airport's own map and the signs on the day rather than a second-hand list, and expect some walking distance to change while the next round of building runs.

Who drops you off, and where a car actually collects you

A private car or a lift from family uses the terminal curb: Departures on Level 3 to leave, Arrivals on Level 2 to collect. That curb is for loading and unloading only — parking at it is prohibited, and waiting there is not allowed.

Ride-hail is the exception, and it is the detail that catches people out. Uber and Lyft now use the Ground Transportation Center on Level 1 of Terminal Garage 2 for both drop-off and pick-up, not the arrivals curb. Budget the walk into the garage, and follow the pick-up zone your app shows alongside the airport's signage.

Taxis and ride-hail trips starting at the airport carry airport and city charges on top of the fare. Those are not fixed numbers, so read the itemized receipt rather than a figure quoted online.

Parking it yourself

On site you have Terminal Garages 1 and 2, Economy Lots B and C with courtesy shuttles, and valet at the ground floor of Terminal Garage 1. Terminal Lot A is closed, whatever an older FAQ says. Spaces cannot be reserved in advance, and parking is cashless — bring a card.

If you are meeting someone, the garages currently allow the first thirty minutes free before charging. Check the live tariff before you drive in, and do not mistake that allowance for permission to wait at the terminal curb.

  • Self-parking on site has been running at roughly $24 to $36 a day, with valet near $48. The airport's own tariff page is the number to trust, not one you remember from last year.
  • Off-site lots with a shuttle, and some airport hotels, can be considerably cheaper — often in the $9 to $20 a day range. Before booking, confirm the shuttle's hours, what taxes are added and the cancellation terms. The cheapest listing is not always the cheapest trip.

Getting there without a car

WeGo's Route 18 Airport bus runs between downtown's WeGo Central — the Elizabeth Duff Transit Center — and BNA's Ground Transportation Center. The express run is around twenty minutes, a local trip thirty-five to forty-five, and luggage is allowed. Check the schedule for the actual day you travel.

Hotel shuttles also use the Ground Transportation Center, but confirm with the hotel that it really runs airport service, whether you have to book it, and whether its hours cover your flight. Not every downtown hotel offers a transfer.

For an early departure, a group, or luggage that will not fit a sedan, a booked car is usually the right call — and exactly the sort of thing worth lining up before the day itself.

Small things that quietly cost time

  • A gate in the Satellite Concourse means a shuttle rather than a walk. Check your gate before settling into lunch.
  • TSA PreCheck lanes are available; CLEAR is a separate service and does not replace screening or PreCheck eligibility. Lane hours vary, so do not count on an expedited lane for the earliest flight.
  • Lounges are eligibility-controlled. The Admirals Club sits after security on the mezzanine between C14 and C16, and a Delta Sky Club is in Concourse B — but a premium ticket does not always open a door, so check the operator's current rules.

What I handle for you

I time the airport run against your flight rather than against a timetable, and I book the transfer that fits: a car for an early departure, an accessible vehicle, child seats, enough room for the luggage you are actually bringing.

You can book the ride yourself through the booking portal at no cost, or send me the details and I will arrange it for a flat $30. Either way, the airport day stops being something you improvise at four in the morning.

Before you go

Ready to plan the trip, airport run and all?

Sketch a draft day by day with the trip planner, or send an inquiry and I will verify the details and build the real plan with you.

Everything on this page is planning guidance, not a booking. Prices, schedules, opening hours and availability change, so each detail is confirmed before anything is reserved or paid.
