Why a cruise works so well for families
A family cruise solves the hard part of travelling with kids: the kids' clubs are genuinely excellent, the food is handled, the entertainment is steps away, and parents get real downtime without leaving anyone behind.
You unpack once, the ship moves, and every age in the family gets its own version of a good day.
Choosing the sailing
- Three to four nights — the taster: a long weekend, one or two ports, ideal for a first cruise or trying it with small children.
- Seven nights — the classic: several ports plus sea days to actually enjoy the ship.
- Bahamas and Caribbean sailings — the family staples, often including a private-island beach day that ends up being everyone's favourite.
- Alaska and Europe — the next step for families with older kids who want more than the pool deck.
The cabin question
Family cabins and connecting rooms sell out first — there are fewer of them than you would think. For a family of four or five, the choice is usually one larger cabin with a split bathroom versus two connecting rooms, and the right answer depends on your kids' ages and your budget.
A verandah is lovely but not essential on a family sailing — you will spend most waking hours out of the cabin anyway.
Book it the day it opens
Character breakfasts, the popular adult-dining nights, nursery hours and the best port adventures open for booking well before sailing — and the good times go fast.
This is where having an agent pays for itself: I track the opening dates for your sailing and grab the slots while you are asleep.
What the kids' clubs actually mean
The clubs are included in the fare and split by age group, from nurseries to teen lounges, with trained staff and proper security check-in. Most kids beg to go back — which means the adults get the quiet dinner, the spa, or simply an hour by the pool with a book.
What I handle for you
Picking the ship and sailing for your family's ages, securing the family cabin before it sells out, booking the dining and port adventures the moment they open, and arranging flights and the pre-cruise hotel so embarkation morning is easy.
